Realistic Fiction                             Guided Reading Level 1-8

Nim and the War Effort reminds us that World War II was not won only on the battlefield. Nim is an example that Americans of all ages and ethnicities collaborated in a variety of War Efforts to aid the Allied Forces. Nim’s school hosts a paper drive competition. Nim is determined to win the paper drive even if Garland says an American will win. After all, she is an American …with Chinese background.

This book could be introduced when speaking of  WWII, ethnicity, or during Chinese New Year to give tribute to our Chinese Americans. I added a Bible verse below that encourages us to look “to the interest of others.” Nim’s story is a great example of helping others.

Philippians 2:4

“…not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
